8/11/2008 - Munich, GermanyThis entry was posted on Monday, August 11, 2008 2:22 PM and is filed under uncategorized. I've managed to get myself out of Istanbul finally. I am in Germany waiting on a flight to Yerevan, Armenia having a bier and a bratwurst. From Armenia I plan on driving to Tbilisi which should take about 6-7 hours. It turns out that the route along the Black Sea would take us into Batumi, Georgia which has been hit by Russian jets and the route from there goes right through Gori, Georgia which has just been taken by Russian ground forces. The route from Armenia is, by far, the better option. I met a journalist trying to do the Batumi route and convinced him to join me on this attempt. We're sticking together all the way to Tbilisi. We are coming from the south and the only delay may come from the exodus of Georgian refugees escaping the Russian onslaught. In Armenia I'm meeting up with other BBC guys and we'll all haul ass into Georgia. I should arrive in Tbilisi around noon tomorrrow.
![]() The Georgians have fallen back from Gori to Mtskheta, 15 miles from the capital where the Georgian army had been told to concentrate its efforts on holding that position to protect Tbilisi. I'm not sure the Russians would actually try to take Tbilisi but who knows. If they want to eliminate the pro-western government there that would definitly do it. If it looks like the Russians are coming we will fall back to the border or somewhere safe in between. CommentsDisplay comments as (Linear | Threaded)
